How to Care for a Memory Bear or Keepsake
A few gentle habits to keep your keepsake safe for years — how to clean it, store it, and protect the fabric that means so much.

A memory keepsake is made from cloth that has already been loved and worn for years, so it deserves a little gentle care to keep it precious for years more. None of this is complicated — just a few kind habits to protect the fabric that means so much.
Can I wash a memory bear or keepsake?
Because your keepsake is made from worn, much-loved clothing, I’d gently advise against machine washing. Older fabric and the seams that hold a bear or cushion together can be stressed by a wash cycle. Instead:
- Spot-clean only — dab gently with a cloth that’s barely damp with cool water, and let it air dry naturally away from heat.
- Avoid soaking or wringing — these can pull at seams and stuffing.
- Skip harsh detergents — if you need a little soap, use the mildest you have, and sparingly.

How do I store it safely?
- Keep it out of direct sunlight. Sunlight slowly fades fabric, so a shelf, chair or bed away from a bright window is kindest.
- Protect it from damp. A dry spot indoors is best; avoid lofts, garages or anywhere that gets cold and damp.
- Use a cotton bag for storage. If your keepsake isn’t on display, a breathable cotton or fabric bag keeps dust and moths away while letting the fabric breathe.
Looking after the little details
If your keepsake includes buttons, a pocket, lace or a badge, handle these parts gently — they’re often the details that mean the most. A keepsake is made to be held and cuddled, so don’t be afraid to love it; just be tender with any delicate features.
Keeping the scent for longer
Many people treasure the scent a loved one’s clothing still carries. Scent fades naturally with handling and fresh air, but keeping your keepsake in a sealed cotton bag between cuddles can help it last longer. And when the scent does eventually fade, the keepsake still holds every memory you made — and that part never fades at all.
